This past week I spent some time in a ministry learning community. At the end of the two days together, the conclusion of 18 months as a cohort, we were challenged to write a letter to our future self of 2025 about what we had accomplished from now until then and what it took for that to happen. It really made me think about the future, which made me think about how little time we spend thinking about the future. Bill Gates once wrote that “most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten.” It goes along with all of the Scriptures, which I’m sure you’re familiar with, about the importance of vision, but what kind of vision? I know I don’t spend enough time looking forward to the future. I may spend time thinking of vision and “casting vision” for big picture life and ministry, but truly engaging my imagination to “see” the future that God could have, that’s not as common. Can you imagine if we lived today in light of that future? What if we truly lived each day in light of eternity too? Now that would be powerful!
Maybe you find yourself in a similar place. Maybe you have vision for some areas of life but not a cohesive way of looking forward to what God has ahead. If so, I want to invite you to join me in looking FORWARD to what God has ahead and then working back and asking God what it would take each day to get to where He wants to lead you! Let’s engage with God as He leads us to where He wants us to go. Not just “then and there” but how that applies to how we live “here and now.”
